Let's Get Started

Who needs the B100 General Contractors License?

In Utah, a B100 license is required for most construction projects, excluding electrical, plumbing, and commercial HVAC work—which require separate licenses.

This license allows contractors to manage a wide range of projects, from small structures to large commercial buildings. Recent changes to Utah law have also added heavy highway, dam, and bridge work to the B100’s scope. However, the state still recommends the General Engineering (E100) license for contractors planning to specialize in that field.

Holding a B100 General Contractor (GC) license demonstrates your ability to manage complex residential and commercial projects while staying compliant with state laws and building codes.

Comparing B100 vs R100, E200, P200, and other license types

The B100 General Building Contractor license covers a broad range of construction work, including many specialty trades—but it does not include General Electrical (E200), General Plumbing (P200), or Commercial HVAC (S350), which require separate licenses.  The Residential & Small Commercial General Contractor (R100) license is a limited version of the B100. It only allows work on structures up to 3 stories and 20,000 sq ft.

Specialty license holders (subcontractors) can work on projects of any size, but must stay within their specific trade. To explore all license types, visit our Utah Contractor License Types page.

A state-approved 30-hour general contractor education class is mandatory. This course includes 25 hours focused on general construction business practices and 5 hours covering Utah-specific laws and regulations.
