What to Expect in the Utah Pre-License Contractor Course

The Utah pre-license contractor course is an in-person, state-required class that most applicants must complete before applying for their contractor license. The course lasts 25 or 30 hours, requires full attendance, covers essential business and legal fundamentals, and ends with a completion certificate used in the licensing process.

If you’re preparing to take the course, this guide explains exactly what to expect: how long it takes, how classes are structured, what’s covered, and what happens after you finish.

How long is the Utah pre-license contractor course?

Utah offers two versions of the pre-license contractor course:

  • 25-hour course – required for most subcontractors and specialty contractors
  • 30-hour course – required for general contractors and certain residential or commercial classifications

The required course length is set by the state.
All hours must be attended in full to receive credit. Missing time or leaving early may prevent you from receiving a completion certificate.

If you’re unsure which course applies to your license type, see our guide comparing them: 25-hour vs. 30-hour Utah pre-license course.

Does the course have to be completed in-person?

Yes. Utah’s pre-license contractor courses are in-person only, as required by state regulations.

Classes are held in a classroom setting and typically offered in two formats:

  • Day classes, held during standard business hours
  • Night classes, held in the evening for working contractors

Lunch is provided for day classes, and dinner is provided for night classes. Meals are provided as a courtesy, and
specific dietary accommodations are not available.

What does the course cover?

The Utah pre-license course focuses on the business, legal, and regulatory responsibilities of contractors operating in the state.

Topics commonly include:

  • Contractor licensing rules and state compliance
  • Business management and recordkeeping
  • Construction law, contracts, and liability
  • Risk management and insurance basics
  • Payment rules, bids, and professional standards
  • Jobsite responsibilities and ethics

While both versions cover core material,
general contractors and specialty contractors may see different emphasis depending on scope of work.

Do you have to attend the entire course?

Yes. Full attendance is required to receive a completion certificate.

To successfully complete the course:

  • All required hours must be attended
  • Students must remain for the full duration of each session
  • Professional conduct is expected throughout the class

After completion, students receive:

  • A physical completion certificate
  • A digital copy sent by email

There is no fee to replace a lost certificate.

Is there a test during the pre-license course?

No. The pre-license contractor course does not include a licensing exam.

The course is instructional and prepares students for future steps, including Utah’s Business & Law exam. The exam itself is taken separately as part of the broader licensing process.

Who hosts and teaches the course?

Utah pre-license contractor courses are hosted at facilities operated by Associated General Contractors of Utah (AGC).

Instruction may be provided by qualified representatives from AGC, government agencies, or other approved organizations. All instructors and course content meet Utah’s pre-licensure requirements.

Contractors School facilitates registration, communication, reminders, and licensing guidance so students know exactly what to do before and after completing the course.

What happens after finishing the course?

Completing the pre-license course is typically the first major step in the contractor licensing process (you can learn about the registration process here).

After finishing the class, most students will:

  1. Receive a completion certificate
  2. Use that certificate when applying for a contractor license through the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL)
  3. Prepare for any required exams, insurance/bonding, and business setup steps
