The 25-hour course generally applies to subcontractor license classifications, while the 30-hour course generally applies to B100, E100, and R100 general contractor applicants, as well as certain other classifications. The additional five hours in the 30-hour course help prepare applicants for the Business & Law exam. Some applicants may qualify for an exemption from pre-license education based on their education or an eligible endorsement or reciprocity pathway.
No. The pre-license contractor license course is just one step. General contractors will need to meet experience requirements and pass the Business & Law exam, and all contractors must submit their application to DOPL with proof of insurance and bonding. Utah generally does not accept an out-of-state pre-license course as a substitute for Utah’s pre-licensure requirements. However, contractors who already hold an active license in a jurisdiction Utah considers equivalent may be eligible to apply for a Utah license by endorsement (often referred to as reciprocity). Eligibility depends on the state, license classification, and the applicant’s licensing history, and endorsement does not necessarily waive every Utah licensing requirement.
