Here are some key challenges that new and experience roofing contractors face, and how the S280 Roofing License can help to mitigate them:
The S280 Roofing License equips contractors with knowledge and tools to effectively manage common roofing industry challenges.
By remaining well-versed in safety regulations, you reduce the risk of workplace accidents and promote compliance with industry standards. The licensing process offers guidance on financial management, allowing you to handle project costs and maintain profitability while preparing you to manage weather-related delays and effectively communicate with clients, keeping expectations in check.
To obtain the S280 Roofing Contractor License in Utah, you must meet specific requirements, including:
Make sure your business entity is registered with the state of Utah. This can be done through our New Business Setup page. If you’re a sole proprietor, you’ll need to use your Social Security Number (SSN) instead of a business entity.
To qualify for the S280 Roofing License, you must have at least 2 years of roofing experience. This can include hands-on work as a journeyman roofer or supervising roofing projects as a foreman. Documentation of your experience, such as W-2 forms or contractor certifications, may be required.
You must complete a 25-hour pre-licensing course approved by the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL). This course will cover important topics such as: Business and Law Exam Preparation, Roofing Techniques and Materials, and Building Codes and Safety Regulations.
You must pass the Utah Business Law exam.
Don’t worry, we’ll make sure you’re prepared!
Roofing contractors in Utah are required to obtain general liability insurance to protect against damages or accidents. Additionally, you must demonstrate financial responsibility by providing financial statements or a surety bond to show your ability to handle business liabilities.
After completing the required coursework and securing insurance, we will assist you in submitting your application for the S280 Roofing License, along with all necessary documentation. This includes proof of experience, education, and payment of the required licensing fees.
Roofing contractors must complete 6 hours of continuing education every two years as part of the license renewal process. The CE hours should cover topics related to roofing practices, safety, and new technologies in the roofing industry.

Yes. Any roof repair, replacement, or installation requires an S280 Roofing license.
No. Structural roof framing requires a B100, R100, or a framing-specific license such as S220 Carpentry & Flooring. S280 covers only the roofing materials and systems, not the structural framing beneath.
No. Solar installation requires an S202 Solar Photovoltaic license (which we can also help you earn—just contact us). S280 contractors can prep or repair roofing surfaces for solar work but cannot install the panels themselves.
You can install asphalt shingles, metal panels, tile, slate, built-up roofing (BUR), single-ply membranes, and modified bitumen systems.
Not usually. Full gutter system installation is more commonly performed under the S230 license (which we can also get you licensed for, just reach out). Some minor roof drainage accessories may be included, but full gutter systems are not.
